  • Setting Boundaries Is a Form of Self-Respect

Boundaries get a fashionable name, but they are really quite old-fashioned: they are the way you tell the world where you end and someone else begins. If you have ever felt drained after helping, resentful after giving, or exhausted simply from existing, your boundaries may need attention.

    What a boundary is not

A boundary is not a wall, and it is not a punishment. It is a clear, kind statement of what you can and cannot offer: “I can call you tomorrow, but I cannot talk at 11pm tonight.”

Why saying yes costs so much

Many of us learned early that our value comes from being needed. Saying no therefore feels like losing love. But the people who genuinely love you will survive your boundaries — and respect them.

Every time you say yes to something you do not want to do, you say no to something you actually need.

    Start small

    • Practise a gentle “Let me get back to you on that.”
    • Give yourself permission to feel the guilt without obeying it.
    • Notice the difference between a real obligation and a learned habit.

If boundary-setting keeps triggering anxiety or family conflict, that is a rich place to do counselling work together.
